I am analysing the abduction scene from the film Taken which is a thriller but also can be classed as a drama. This scene is an important part of the movie as it sets up the rest of the plot, is full of suspense and leaves the audience wanting to find out what happens which is what I would be interested in doing in my trailer. In the scene Liam Neeson’s character’s Daughter and her friend are abducted from their apartment after they arrive in Paris. Mis-en-scene plays an important role during this scene, lighting in particular as when we see Neeson’s character there is heavy use of dark lighting in his apartment which displays some of his character’s personality that he is a dark character who should not be messed with. Sound isn’t used much in his apartment with its use being below average but the faint sound of trucks in the background suggests that it is situated near a main road also hinting that his character doesn’t make much money compared to the step dad who lives in a mansion and bought the daughter a horse for her birthday. Sound is used more in the girl’s French apartment in which one of the girls plays music at full blast, for one representing her character as an outgoing party girl but also as the camera moves through the apartment the sound of the music fades but is still being heard demonstrating that this is a big apartment. The only real props used in this scene are mobile phones owned by the characters, when Neeson’s character rings his daughter his is saved as ‘daddy’ in the daughter’s phone representing her character as shy, quiet and timid and still a virgin while her friend is more outgoing freely talking about sex.
The Camera work also plays an important part in the scene. When Neeson’s daughter is on the phone she walks through corridors to different rooms while the camera is on a dolly and moves with her, this shows again that this is a big apartment. Again when she is hiding under the bed from the kidnapper the camera shows a point of view shot from under the bed creeping out and showing the attacker at an angle looking up at him showing that he has more power in this scene and to show the audience her perspective that she is scared. Close ups are of props such as mobile phones and the daughter’s face while on the phone showing her fear and keeping the audience possibly scared or in suspense along with her.

Inspirational Texts (Empire magazine covers)
Empire is probably the most well known film magazine out there in the shops. Everyone knows just by looking at the cover that it is will have news about films that are coming out or reviews on ones already out. The mast head is constantly obscured by the image on the front but that's okay as everyone already knows the magazine and can still read it but it also gives empathizes to the main film that features in this issue as it is the current biggest release hence it has the biggest presence on the cover with several other side stories around it. Alternatively, the collector's edition available to subscribers obmits these other stories so only the main image is seen. There is also a tagline of 'the world's biggest movie magazine' that is sometimes altered as a joke or reference to a film such as the one for the Hobbit where it says 'the shire's biggest movie magazine.' The bar code is at the bottom and the essential information is near the mast head and these are in the same location on every issue so you know where to look in order to see which issue it is.
Inspirational Texts (Attack on Titan Film Poster)
In the anime, mankind has been driven to near extinction by the titans (giant creatures who devour humans seemingly without reason.) The remnants of the human population live inside a city surrounded by enormous walls until one day, the Colossal titan appears and breaks down the wall. Eren Jaeger and his foster sister Mikasa watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows to murder and annihilate every single titan and take revenge for all of mankind.
This is a brilliant example of a movie poster that tells you the basic story, features the main character and the biggest threat, features a tagline, a fake release date and names at the bottom just like a real poster would have. If I could make a movie poster half of the quality of this one then I would be extremely pleased.
Who am I kidding? I could never create a poster to this standard but its nice to have something to strive for isn't it?
Inspirational Texts (Paranormal Activity website)
Paranormal activity was a low budget film but its brilliant marketing strategies ensured that It was a box office hit, it had a budget of $15,000 but made nearly $200 million. The film sold itself as an experience and created a website where people could post their reactions but also the website had a demand to see feature in which people could demand to see the film in their city.
There is a feature in the top left-hand corner where people can tell their friends and several options in order to do it with links to several different social networking sites. In the red columns you can there are reviews in white font which helps it to stand out against the other colours on the page. There are institutional logos along the bottom and information about the various distributors of the film.
The website is simplistic due to the budget but enables user's to easily navigate the website and also has links to post your reactions on twitter to further spread the film to more people. A website like this would be ideal for my film as it is simple and easy to navigate and reflects the budget.
Proposal
After looking over the list of briefs I have decided that I will attempt:
2. A promotional package for a new film, to include a teaser trailer, together with two of the following three options, a website homepage for the film, a film magazine front cover, featuring the film, a poster for the film.
In my coursework for last year I created the opening for a film which was difficult as it had to begin a story that would be continued through the rest of the film but also hook the audience. I think that a teaser trailer could be slightly easier as it has to set up the film but not reveal anything important to the film. It is inteneded to attract the target audience. This could be an interesting. The skills that I developed last year will be useful during the filming and the editing stages and now that I have had some practice I should be more efficient and avoid some of the problems that I encountered last year.
Reguarding the theme, last year I intended to create a thriller but that kind of went sideways and evolved into a mixture of two. I don't have a firm idea for a story yet but I would like to avoid doing a thriller this year unless I come up with a really interesting idea for one. I also would like to stay away from horror and action for obvious reasons that they will be complicated to do well. A drama how ever sounds like a good idea, possibly with a lot of darker scenes ? However at this stage I really don't know.
I am not very skilled on photo shop but this brief could give me the chance to develop the skills as I would need to use it to create a movie poster. Once I have an idea then I could reflect that onto the poster which I am looking forward to doing. Then its a choice between either a website homepage or a front cover of a magazine (they both sound terrible) but I will look for examples of each and make a firm decision at a later date. I will continue to add inspirational texts as and when I find them in order to keep my blog regularly updated.
This brief I believe could be a good way to extend my already existing ideas and be creative by thinking of shot types, storyboards, characters and hopefully get everything finished by Christmas so that I never have to look at it again.

Reflection on AS coursework
First year over!
The year flew by and wasn't as painful as I had imagined. It gave me the opportunity to create a piece of media (in my case the opening 2 minutes of a film) from scratch and really appreciate the effort that goes into creating something.
I learned how to use premier pro and use different tools within the program to complete my opening whilst also tweaking things or replacing them entirely as my ideas developed. This was the first time that I have ever done something like this, think of an idea, film it and then the (tedious) editing stage but it turned out just fine so I don't know what I was worried about.
I feel extremely pleased with my grade (B) for my coursework because as I said it was my first time creating something from scratch and all the work that I put into it seemed worth it. However, I played it safe last year with basic camera angles and nothing too fancy but this year I would like to challenge myself and try to use different or interesting camera angles. This project for next year seems kind of daunting because there will be other parts of the project that I will need to complete but I will do my best and hopefully do well.
